Cancelling out systematic uncertainties
We present a method to minimize, or even cancel out, the nuisance parameters affecting a measurement. Our approach is general and can be applied to any experiment or observation. We compare it with the bayesian technique used to deal with nuisance parameters: marginalization, and show how the method compares and improves by avoiding biases. We illustrate the method with several examples taken f...
متن کاملFiltering out near - surface uncertainties from helioseismicinversionsSarbani
The diierences between observed solar p-mode frequencies and the frequencies of a reference model can be inverted to infer the structure of the Sun using a variety of linear inversion techniques. However, it is well known that the adiabatic description, which is often employed in frequency calculations, breaks down in the outermost layers of the Sun. This and other uncertainties in the treatmen...
متن کاملBayesian Treatments of Systematic Uncertainties
Luc Demortier The Rockefeller University, New York, NY 10021, U.S.A. Abstract The standard Bayesian treatment of systematic uncertainties is to integrate out the corresponding nuisance parameters from the joint posterior density for all parameters. We apply this formalism to measurements in which the data cannot distinguish between nuisance parameters and parameters of interest, and show that i...
متن کاملQuantifying systematic uncertainties in supernova cosmology
Observations of Type Ia supernovae used to map the expansion history of the Universe suffer from systematic uncertainties that need to be propagated into the estimates of cosmological parameters. We propose an iterative Monte Carlo simulation and cosmology fitting technique (SMOCK) to investigate the impact of sources of error upon fits of the dark energy equation of state. This approach is esp...
متن کاملCancelling out early age gender differences in competition – an analysis of policy interventions
We study the willingness to compete of 588 children and teenagers aged ten to seventeen. We replicate the gender difference in tournament entry choices usually found in the literature for adults. We then show that policy interventions like quotas and preferential treatment help to close down the gender gap without leading to losses in efficiency, during or after a tournament. Given that differe...
